Since 1995, that love of quality and subtle accent has been a guiding light for Susan van der Linde as she developed her reputation with both private clients and retail shoppers for excellent quality, perfect fit and something special in her designs.
Susan started her fashion career as a child growing up in Grand Rapids, MI. Born with a classical sense of style that had to be expressed, she began designing and sewing most of her own clothes at age 10. At 19 she left the Midwest for Paris where she quickly became a print and TV model for numerous global brands throughout Europe.
After nearly a decade in front of the camera, Susan moved from Paris to New York to pursue her passion for design and sewing. She began her formal training at F.I.T. with Janine Galimard (protégé of Cristobal Balenciaga). Ms. Galimard immediately recognized Susan’s talents and connected her with the legendary Milliner, Don Marshall.
Mr. Marshall, known as the ‘man behind the veil’, served legendary clients such as Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford and Rose Kennedy.
Susan spent the next eight years working side by side with Mr. Marshall in New York and five consecutive summers in Paris with the renowned Jean Charles Brousseau, Marie Mercié and Ungaro. This was also when she began designing accessories to complement the collections of numerous designers. A short list includes Verdura, Geoffrey Beene, Mary McFadden, James de Givenchy, Randolph Duke and Ralph Rucci, CHADO.
Today, Susan and her staff continue to define the custom/couture experience with exceptional service focused on giving each client their desired combination of style, material & color . Clients visiting the SvdL Private Store (at 36 East 57th Street in Manhattan) will find a wide array of exceptional hats, handbags & shoes. And if you can't find the perfect item in store, any hat shoe or bag can be made to order.
